Carrying June

poetry from
the heart

When words fall short, poetry speaks. These verses are written by parents, caregivers, and loved ones whose hearts have been reshaped by pediatric cancer.

Neutropenia Admission

Salt dough ornaments
Cookie dough
Surprising sister and brother after school
We had plans

Your Christmas dress
came in the mail
But you’re not there
To try it on
To light up as you twirl

Instead you sleep 19 of 24 hours
(Or course I’ve counted)
After a simple fever steals your smile

Somehow, I’m lucky
I sniff what’s left of your hair
Memorizing your scent
What a privilege it is
to feel your warm blooded scalp
under my kiss
That I wipe away after
Careful to distance it
Far enough away from your face
To keep you safe

I second guess every move
On my knees, sanitizing the floor

“Mommy snuggle” garbled in between dreams and machine beeps
